RTM 404- Cross Cultural Perspectives of Tourism
I took RTM 404 this semester and have found it extremely useful in studying what type of tourism I would want to engage in. I have found that one of my goals upon graduation would be to travel the world. I want to start by traveling to Europe and also partake in VolunTourism so that I can immerse myself in a country's culture while learning about them and myself. I feel like it would be a rewarding experience. I learned about leadership within a community and what it means to be sustainable. I think leadership begins with how you approach a situation. For example, we learned that before going on any VolunTourism trip, it is proper to know the Do's and Don'ts of the culture. It is also important to do your research on the climate and the people. As a side note, many cultures that suffer extreme poverty still have a smile on their face.
My teacher, Larry Beck went on a trip to Peru through an organization called Globalware. He chose this VolunTourism trip because they aligned with his values and beliefs. While in Peru, he interacted with the children and taught. He got to visit different areas of Peru and engage in their every day life. He says that there should be a 50/50 split on volunteering and fun. He got to go to their festival, learn about their food (they eat Guinea Pigs), see Maccu Pichu, as well as volunteer by creating a play area for the orphanage as well as put up fence and drains for the living quarters.
I want to work for a company someday that cares about its people. Just like choosing an organization to travel with, choosing a company to work for that aligns with your own values and beliefs is important too. It is a stepping stone to being happy where you work. I want to do my research and engage in a beneficial relationship with both my employers and employees. I think having different perspectives makes you a good leader. Not assuming information and actually doing your research is beneficial for a company relationship. If you want to take a look at what I learned in RTM 404 in more detail, take a look at my attached portfolio for the class.

HTM 301- Kaleidoscope
In HTM 301, I learned to use goals that I set for myself along with competencies to accomplish activities. We also learned how to use our own unconscious motivators to do well when we lead. We learned our print score numbers and what they represent. We learned what our best self attributes are as well as our trigger points. Knowing someone else's trigger point makes it easier to avoid a situation that will be uncomfortable and helps you to lead in a way that someone else understands. My unconscious motivator is to enjoy life and be happy. Other motivators could be for success or for fame. If you click on the file below you can see my paper that I wrote on my print reflection. You will gain some insight on how I lead.

Another cool development activity we did in HTM 301 was a report on following a manager and observing how their leadership style affects their management. This was an awesome way to see leadership and follower reactions. My report was on the general manager at PINK Victoria Secret. Laura Solis was fast and quick but very helpful to her employees. She wanted to make sure her employees were all knowledgeable about the product and promotions going on. She lead with a smile and with a positive attitude. I believe her style of leadership is transformational. She is extremely involved positively in all of her employees work days. Another great step we took into developing our own leadership style was to create a power point slide on our core competencies and activities. We created activities to work on that would help us develop our competency skills that we need more practice with. All the different competencies make up a collection of leadership skills that in return build a competent leader. The slide I created is downloaded above. Overall, the class was a great step into the world of leadership.
