Hillcrest House Bed and Breakfast
For my HTM 398 class I did my internship at the Hillcrest House Bed and Breakfast. I got hired by the owner, Anne Callahan. I could not have been more blessed with a perfect internship and leader to teach me the ins and outs of the hospitality industry. I sent her my resume at the end of Spring Semester last school year and she noticed I was in Delta Gamma Sorority at SDSU. She brought me in for an interview because she was excited. She was a Delta Gamma at state when she was in college. When explaining Anne's style of leadership, I would say she was authentic. She never changed in front of guests. She is overall, a helpful and caring and strong leader. She really cares about her guests and getting their needs solved above her own. There are so many lessons she taught me while I was doing my internship over the summer.
The internship consisted of working in all the different departments of the B & B. I started out house-keeping, moved on to breakfast prep and cooking along with guest check-in and check-out. Eventually, Anne had me doing trip preparation and taking all the phone calls, as well as over night Interim Inn-keeping. Her goal was to have me running the B & B without her there. I came across some interesting stories while there, but most importantly learning a lesson every single day.
I learned that even a simple buffet breakfast takes lots of preparation. I learned that house-keeping is NOT an easy task. I learned that emergencies can and WILL happen. For example, there was a man that slipped on the concrete out front and lost 4 teeth and smashed his nose causing stitches. The man was from Germany and was suppose to leave that night on a plane for home. Needless to stay, him and his wife stayed two extra nights. But he was safe and got to the hospital right away because Anne was able to drive him down the street to the ER. He was very thankful for the help. Another thing I learned is that having a sense of direction is very important. Anne made me memorize directions and picture where places were, as well as draw out maps so that I could explain to our guests where they should go.
I learned that running a six bedroom bed and breakfast was anything but easy. It made me appreciate patience, as well as people too. People are so interesting and I was lucky to meet guests from all over the world. I enjoyed decorating for guests for their wedding, anniversaries, Comicon, and birthdays even. Sometimes, just sitting and having a cup of coffee with people and learning about them is so rewarding.

Victoria Secret PINK Campus Representative
I have been a PINK Rep for SDSU for the past two years. It has been a huge learning experience that will really prepare me for the real world. I have had had a rep partner that worked with little drive and loved to do everything last minute. I have also thrown events for students on campus where it has been mayhem. It was all worth it though, and so much fun along the way.
Under my Campus Rep position I have been given an opportunity to engage with the students on campus, the new PINK store associates at Fashion Valley Mall, as well as VS PINK headquarters. I have the duty of responding to surveys and trends that are upcoming, as well as promoting events and coming up with ideas to drive students to the new PINK store. I get to be creative and plan events based on what students are interested in on our campus. I have planned social media events, on-campus events, as well as in-store events. I got to pass out freebies and help plan the Grand Opening at PINK Fashion Valley. It is cool to be able to relate to the students and give them what they want. PINK is an amazing brand to be a part of. They want to be the "it girl". They know what the PINK customer wants. They stay on trend and are so excited about their customers wants and needs.
I hired a street team to help me put on my events this year and they have been a great help in building my leadership skills. They are amazing helpers and inspire me everyday to do better each event. One of the main things this job has taught me is to find a niche that makes you relate to the customers and have fun while doing it. Leadership and working will just come with the job and you won't even feel like you are working! Some of the events we have planned are pictured in the slideshow below! Hope you enjoy.

Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery
The last job I am going to mention is Tilted Kilt. My experience here has been quite a roller coaster but I am happy I am still working here and have the awesome co-workers that I do. Tilted Kilt has taught me that management can be young and that moving up in a company is palpable, but being respected is most important. Many of the girls I work with have moved up to head waitress, bar tender, and then even manager. They had to separate being a friend from being a manager. I realize that work cannot be all fun and games.
TK holds many different promo events as well as in store events. I have met the charger team just through one of the promo events I've been to. I have also worked patio events where we have performers rock out and we have drink specials or a buffet event for some type of sports team. We get to experience catering and promotions. This is a cool experience.
Another point that I saw made clear is that just sitting with your customers and talking to them about their day makes regulars. When you remember their name, drink order, and what you talked about last time with them, it is impressive. We are not just servers at the Tilted Kilt, we are also entertainers. We want you to drink, eat, and have a great time talking to awesome girls. I believe that every person in the hospitality industry should try working in a restaurant as one of their jobs. It teaches you respect for employees and employers, as well as helps you appreciate a loyal and respectful customer. That one tough customer is a learning experience and tests your ability to work under pressure.
